So I'm on assignment to collect a variety of images that I wish I photographed myself. One of the first photographers who captured my attention back in the mid-80's was David LaChapelle, for his surrealistic narratives in fashion, celebrity, and advertising. He was garish, raw, over-the-top, crazy. And yet, he was a visionary and broke ground for conceptual photography. You either love his work or hate it, but look closely enough, and you'll find beauty in his madness.
He's now retired from shooting commercially, whittling his days away in Maui on a former nudist colony. Below are some of my favorite pieces from him, with a couple fashion shots that show David's elegant side in addition to his edgier one.
Now that he's off the radar for celebrity shooting, guess who plans to take his place??? ; )
