Awesome Fiscus Find!

So my ongoing search continues for photographs that inspire me....

I need to broaden my portfolio with more portraits and came across an incredible CGI spread called "The Unfortunate Moment of Misunderstanding," by noted portrait photographer, Jim Fiscus. The narrative imagery revolves around a doll-maker and his obsession with his craft.

It's so reminiscent of the work from my all-time favorite fashion photographer, Spanish-based Eugenio Recuenco. I would've never associated this spread with Fiscus, whose most recent work includes the punchy, bloody portraits for the Showtime murder show "Dexter."

Love those serendipitous finds!

My Homage to David LaChapelle

So I'm on assignment to collect a variety of images that I wish I photographed myself. One of the first photographers who captured my attention back in the mid-80's was David LaChapelle, for his surrealistic narratives in fashion, celebrity, and advertising. He was garish, raw, over-the-top, crazy. And yet, he was a visionary and broke ground for conceptual photography. You either love his work or hate it, but look closely enough, and you'll find beauty in his madness.

He's now retired from shooting commercially, whittling his days away in Maui on a former nudist colony. Below are some of my favorite pieces from him, with a couple fashion shots that show David's elegant side in addition to his edgier one.

Now that he's off the radar for celebrity shooting, guess who plans to take his place??? ; )

The End is Soon in Sight!

God bless Finals Week and the perpetual caffeine IV drip that's lodged into my veins. God bless the inventors of Red Bull when the IV drip loses its potency. God bless NoDoz when all else fails and the all-nighters keep coming. And God bless this blog for keeping me from studying for finals, which perpetuates the artificial stimulant cycle!

As of Thursday, my sixth semester at Art Center College of Design will be complete. Official graduation date is August 2010. Looking forward to getting my life and sanity back again!

My favorite photograph that I shot this term was an homage to "Sin City." A composite job of seven images merged into one, it was shot over the course of two weeks in three different locations. Dear thanks to Shawn for helping me with some of the dirty work -- oh, the joys of extracting hair from green screen! The final composited image and outtakes from the shoot are below; click on them to view them in larger format.

Gotta love me in pink with a pistol!
